Google Forms “Server rejected” upload errors: causes and fixes
Updated 2026-10-17. Sources are linked inline; we cite Google's own help pages where possible.
When a file won't upload to a Google Form, the cause is almost always one of a handful of known issues. Google's respondent help covers the main ones: you must be signed in to a Google Account to upload, the owner can limit file number, type and size, and “You can't upload a file from a shared drive” (Google Docs Editors Help).
Cause 1: The respondent isn't signed in to a Google Account
A work or school email that isn't a Google account won't work. Fix (respondent): sign in with any Google account. Fix (owner): if your audience doesn't use Google, collect files outside the File upload question (see options).
Cause 2: The file breaks the owner's limits
The owner chooses allowed file types, the maximum number of files and the maximum size per file (Google). Fix: check the question's instructions, or (owner) raise the limits.
Cause 3: The file is picked from a shared drive
Google says you can't upload a file from a shared drive (Google). Fix: copy the file to My Drive or your device first.
Cause 4: The form lives in a shared drive
File upload questions aren't supported for forms stored in shared drives (Stony Brook IT). Fix (owner): move the form to My Drive.
Cause 5: The owner's Drive is full, or a Workspace admin restricts uploads
Uploads count against the owner's storage. Workspace admins can also restrict file upload or external sharing. Fix (owner): free up space or ask your admin.
Cause 6: Flaky connection on mobile
Fix: retry on Wi-Fi, or upload from a desktop browser.
FAQ
What does 'Server rejected' mean in Google Forms?
It is a generic upload failure. Common causes: not signed in to a Google Account, a file that breaks the owner's type, size or count limits, a file picked from a shared drive, or the owner's storage or admin restrictions.
Why can't I upload a file from a shared drive to a Google Form?
Google doesn't allow uploading a file from a shared drive in response to a form (source: https://support.google.com/docs/answer/15473134?hl=en). Download or copy it to My Drive first.
How can form owners avoid upload errors for outside respondents?
Remove the File upload question and use a no-login upload link that saves into your Drive, so respondents never hit the sign-in wall.
